The other day a friend asked me for cute gift ideas for her sister who loves cats. Of course, I told her about ClayPaws® kits and then she told me about Kitty Wigs, a new book of photos by Jill Johnson and Julie Jackson showing--you guessed it---cats wearing wigs. (Full title is Glamourpuss: The enchanting world of kitty wigs)
Now, I must admit I usually get all snobby and self-righteous about dressing up animals. I think it turns them into play things and doesn't encourage people to treat them with dignity and respect. But, these pictures are so absurd and, well, downright clever, that I found myself feeling delighted by them.
I guess it's not for me to say it's right or wrong to use animals in this way. I just know it's funny. Check it out at www.kittywigs.com and see what you think.

I have to comment on my own blog. I just went to the kitty wigs site and clicked on the outtakes...then watched the animated ecards. They are really funny. Go see...

Went back to look at the ecards. #2 is pretty funny! I don't know if my cats would tolerate the wig thing. ;-)

How fun to see the kitties with these silly wigs! I am a supporter of a local Chicago Cat Shelter, which is Tree House! They actually have a whole series of their special kitties who are available for adoption, posed with these darlig wigs on their cute little heads! I just laughed out loud so hard the first time I saw these pictures! Yes, we by all means should dignify our darling housemates, but this is just too cute and I have it on good authority that the Tree House Shelter Cats who posed with these silly wigs received beau coup treats, for the time and effort!
How fun was that?

Hi Midge!
So fun to hear from you!
I had no idea you actually knew some Kitties in Wigs...I'd love to see them in person and be part of the photo shoots. The out takes and animated ecards cracked me up. I think this is such a clever idea.
Can you imagine your Buddy in a wig? Maybe one with dreadlocks?

I'm the creator of Kitty Wigs and I'm so glad you like it! The best thing about the whole idea is that the cats really love the attention, so it's definitely all about our love for them. And they never wear them for long, just until they're done with it (my cat Boone just has a very long attention span, apparently!)
Don't miss the video!: http://kittywigs.com/thevideo.html
Funny that commenter mentioned Tree House, we did something with them for the Chicago Fur Ball back before we had a book. They're great! I'll have to go check out their cats in wigs now.
Cheers!

p.s. The cat falling is named Bacon - the story is on the outtakes page. http://kittywigs.com/outtakes.html

Hi Julie!
Thanks for commenting on our blog!
I do really love your book and your website. What fun you all seem to be having! I've long admired William Wegman's work with dressing up his dogs and posing them in very human situations. There's just something so provacative and delightful about it...can't really describe it, but it makes me giggle and that's good (as long as the animals are also having fun and yours seem to be...)
Thanks for the contribution to happiness!

Hi Julie, thanks for commenting on our blog. In my opinion, the more we can all laugh each day, the more we can deal with our stress (and there's WAY to much of that going around, don't you think?) I enjoy your website and it's obvious that you work with these cats in order to advocate for them (and all cats). Thanks for sharing!
